Be The Captain Of Your Career: Kate Pace Shares Her Story

In 2015, my husband and I decided to take a cruise called “The Splendors of Southern Spain.” Prior to that trip, I had never been to Spain but had always longed to go there. That trip was everything & more than I had expected from the majestic Alhambra in Grenada, to strolling the beautiful village of Mijas, to learning how to make paella in Valencia. A definite highlight though was getting to know the people of this beautiful country which made me appreciate it even more.

Fast forward to now where life has brought me full circle and I have been given the fun challenge of recruiting Sales Recruiters for our European Mid-Sized Enterprise sales channel to be based in one of my favorite cities, Barcelona! Gartner’s MSE sales channel is one of the largest, fastest-growing, most profitable sales channels within the company and needs talented recruiters to help drive its growth.

I have loved spending my days making “new friends” and speaking to fellow recruiters across the globe. With my 10 year Gartner anniversary right around the corner, I’ve been reflecting on the experience I’ve gained, relationships I’ve fostered, and how I’ve evolved personally and professionally along the way. Since joining Gartner in 2011, I’ve had the opportunity to move across the country, lead teams of talented recruiters and sourcers, and also grow my family.

What am I most proud of? The people I have brought into Gartner across our sales and HR organizations. I love seeing how people’s careers have progressed and the business impact of my hires.

What’s been the greatest lesson I’ve learned here? YOU are the captain. YOU have the ability to steer your course.  Here are 3 things you can do to make the most of your career:

  1. Seek opportunities and identify the steps you need to take to achieve them. Don’t be afraid to take a risk!
  2. Be honest with yourself. Know your strengths, areas of development, and take time to self-reflect.
  3. Build your brand, build relationships and be kind! Your personal and professional network can play a key role in your career success.
