A Day in the Life of a Sales Development Associate at Gartner

The Gartner Sales Development Program (SDP) is intended to be a 15- to 18-month comprehensive development program to teach you the skills to move into a quota-bearing sales role. Within this program, the goal is to progress among three levels of increasing sales responsibility and earn promotions with each level. Wondering what a day in the life is like for a Sales Development Associate? We asked a few program graduates to share their experiences and advice for those considering the SDP.

What did a day in your life look like?

Allison R., Account Executive

A typical day involved researching target accounts, preparing for prospect and client calls, developing outreach strategies, and collaborating with AEs to identify new opportunities. One of the most exciting parts of the role was being trusted early on to engage with C-level executives and contribute to meaningful business conversations alongside my Account Executive partners.

Beyond prospecting through calls and emails, I focused on thoughtful call preparation and strategic follow-up to better understand business priorities and move opportunities forward. The role provided constant exposure to different organizations, industries, and leadership challenges, making every day unique. Every conversation, meeting, and follow-up helped me develop the skills needed to create value for prospects and contribute to meaningful business outcomes.

One of my favorite parts of the role was that no two days looked the same. I typically spent my mornings focused on outreach, while my afternoons were filled with conversations with the team or Gartner’s experts. Those conversations were super valuable to me because they helped me put myself in the shoes of a CHRO and continued to develop my strategic mindset. There is always something new available through Gartner (webinars, insights, etc.), so a big part of my day involved mapping those back to my client’s priorities and identifying ways we could use them to deliver value to our clients and prospects. I also spent time planning ahead and reprioritizing my workload as things changed throughout the day. Most importantly, I learned something new every day. That constant opportunity for growth kept me excited throughout the program and continues to excite me in my role today.

How did the Sales Development Program prepare you for your current role?

Allison R., Account Executive

The Sales Development Program gave me the foundation and confidence to take the next step in my career. Through the program, I gained valuable experience engaging with executive leaders, supporting growth opportunities, and learning how Gartner helps organizations tackle their most important challenges.

The biggest lesson I took away was learning how to become comfortable being uncomfortable. Whether it was cold calling senior executives, handling objections, or stepping into new opportunities, the program consistently pushed me outside my comfort zone and helped me grow.

My experience in the program really helped me succeed in role because it focuses on the fundamental aspects of the role that are key to succeed. The program gives you the space to really build those skills, gain confidence, and learn through experience before taking the next step in your career.

What advice do you have for candidates considering the Sales Development Program?

Allison R., Account Executive

My advice for anyone considering the program would be to stay curious and coachable. The people who get the most out of the experience are those who actively seek feedback, ask questions, and take advantage of opportunities outside their core role. Some of my most valuable experiences came from mentoring peers, participating in onboarding panels, and helping launch Gartner's first SDP Book Club. Those opportunities helped me expand my network and develop leadership skills early in my career.

There’s no single “right way” to be successful in the role. Staying true to yourself, leveraging your strengths, and continuously developing areas of opportunity are all key to long-term success. One of the things I appreciate most about Gartner is the number of opportunities available for personal and professional development. Being honest with yourself about where you want to grow and using your strengths to help get you there can make a huge difference.
