5 Tips to Become a Successful Gartner Referral

Written by: Sandy Ash, Recruiting Program Specialist

Know someone at Gartner and eager to join them? Consider leveraging your network to become a Gartner referral. Referrals make up to 25% of Gartner’s external hires globally. Learn from a Referral Program expert how to best leverage your network by following these five easy tips. Please note, referral eligibility terms will apply.*

    1. Research Gartner. Take the time to understand the company and our culture. Having this knowledge will help you determine if you can see yourself working for Gartner in the long term. Ask yourself: Does  Gartner’s value proposition align with my career goals?
    2. Identify current Gartner associates in your network. Whether it’s your former colleague, neighbor, sibling or someone from your LinkedIn network, make a shortlist of who may be your best Gartner point of contact.
    3. Browse the Gartner Career site. Identify one to five roles that align with your professional experience. For each job posting, scroll down until you find the “Job Requisition ID” number. Record this number in your notes.
    4. Make the ask. Approach your point of contact, and let them know you are interested in career opportunities at Gartner. Only one Gartner associate may hold referral credit for a candidate for any 12-month period, so be sure to choose your point of contact wisely. Provide the Job Requisition ID number of the role(s) you are interested in, your most updated resume and your contact details when making the ask. Also consider having an exploratory conversation with the Gartner associate and prepare a list of questions. Possible questions may include: “What motivated you to join Gartner?”, “What keeps you at Gartner?”, and “What was the interview experience like?”
    5. Prepare for a potential interview. Every referral candidate is guaranteed a thorough resume review. If the current opportunities align, a recruiter will reach out directly to have a phone screen. During this interim period, prepare for next steps by continuing to research Gartner and reviewing the role(s) you were referred to.

Tip: If you are not selected for the opportunities you were referred to, continue applying directly on the career site to any roles of interest. After you've been officially submitted as a referral, your Gartner point of contact's referral endorsement is attached to each application you complete for the next 12 months.

Approximately 20% of Gartner’s referral hires are candidates who were initially not selected for the position but later re-engaged when a new opportunity opened. Referrals are always top of mind at Gartner!

Hear from one of our associates as she shares her own experience with the Gartner Associate Referral Program.

“Chase and I worked together at a previous company for almost two years. I was fairly new to technology sales/IT, and Chase always brought positive energy and was a very supportive colleague. We spent a lot of time strategizing and building our knowledge of what is important to CIOs in different industries. When I heard he was looking for a new role, I knew he would be a great fit for Gartner as he holds strong to many of the core values and traits. I'm grateful to work with him again and have the chance to ping each other little messages of encouragement on Teams!” — Karly Q., Account Executive

*All referrals will be reviewed for eligibility prior to approval. If you have been in written or verbal contact with the recruiting team within the last six months, have a standing noncompete or nonsolicitation agreement with Gartner, or are formerly employed by Gartner, you will not be eligible for the Associate Referral Program at this time.
