About the role 

Gartner is looking for a Sr. Software Engineer focusing on data engineering and backend services. This person will be a part of team developing and supporting Gartner ‘s client facing experience. This includes supporting all the data related operations within the team. This position will provide an opportunity to work with on several different technologies focusing on data modelling, data services, data science, API and backend services This includes building and consuming web services, integrating search technologies, and building personalization, recommendation engines, data engineering best practices integration. 

What You Will do 

Backend Design & Development

  • Architect, design, and develop backend services using Java, Spring Boot, Microservices, or Python.

  • Build and maintain robust, scalable, and high-performance web services.

  • Troubleshoot, optimize, and maintain existing applications and services.

System Architecture & Engineering

  • Apply deep knowledge of Data Structures, Algorithms, and Design Patterns to solve engineering challenges.

  • Participate in architecture design and implementation of high-performance, scalable, and optimized data solutions. Prepare documentations and specifications 

  • Ensure application security, scalability, and reliability.

Data Engineering & Processing

  • Build and optimize data processing pipelines using PySpark.

  • Design and implement ETL/ELT pipelines.

  • Integrate ML Engineering workflows into production environments.

  • Good Sql understanding with ability to create the data model from scratch. Help write and optimize in-application SQL statements. Ensure performance, security, and availability of databases

Database & Storage Management

  • Design, implement, and manage relational databases (PostgreSQL or similar).

  • Utilize various NoSQL storage engines like DynamodB.

Integration & Automation

  • Integrate data pipeline, backend services and external APIs.

  • Contribute to the automation of development, testing, and deployment processes.

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, product managers, and engineers within an Agile/Scrum framework to define requirements and deliver end-to-end features.

  • Mentor junior engineers, conduct code reviews, and promote best practices.

What you’ll need:

Must have:

  • 5-7 years of professional experience in the IT industry.

  • Core Engineering : Strong command of Data Structures and Algorithms (DSA) and SOLID design principles.

  • Backend Mastery : Proven experience developing production-scale, customer-facing API (Python).

  • Data & ML : Practical experience with ETL/ELT processes and familiarity with Machine Learning Engineering (deploying and scaling models).

  • Storage : Proficiency across different storage engines (Relational, Document, or Key-Value).

  • Cloud : AWS / MS Azure / Google Cloud

Nice to have/opportunity to learn:

  • Experience with Machine Learning or Agentic Workflows or AI-driven automation.

  • Cloud expertise, specifically in AWS (EMR, Lambda, EC2, RDS, S3 etc.).

  • Hands-on experience with DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure as Code.

  • Experience in java backend development.
