About the role:   

Gartner is searching for a Director, Team Manager to join our global Peer and Practitioner Research team in the Finance practice. This group is responsible for investigating, analyzing and documenting insightful research findings that will change how senior finance executives approach their most strategic challenges. This team manager will directly lead a team of 5 researchers, with potential to grow their scope and responsibilities. They will develop and coach their team to master their research and content creation craft with the end goal of impacting the success of senior finance. They’ll work as part of a global Finance research team, collaborating closely with research leaders and associates located in North America. 

What you will do:  

  • Enable teams to write and publish high quality content: Apply Gartner’s Content Essentials (standards for high quality content), in combination with your own expertise, to guide teams through Gartner’s Content Production Process to produce deliverables with compelling writing and illustrations that make Gartner’s advice relevant and actionable.  
  • Develop content creation mastery in your team: Provide coaching/training/feedback to support your team’s ability to create content that changes how finance leaders manage their function by helping them recognize when/where conventional approaches have failed finance leaders and identify best practices that would drive superior outcomes.  
  • Develop research mastery in your team: Provide coaching/training/feedback to support your team’s ability to apply qualitative and quantitative research methods as laid out in Gartner’s research processes, methods, and tools. Support your team’s ability to make exceptional use of secondary research, internal data sources, surveys and interviews with executives, academics, and industry experts to compile evidence that meets senior finance executives’ burden of proof 
  • Coach your team to successful internal and external interactions: Use Gartner training and personal expertise to help your team have two-way value interactions with Gartner clients and effectively collaborate across a diverse range of roles and personalities within Gartner.  
  • Manage your team members to personal and professional success: Manage team members’ professional success by providing coaching, mentoring, constructive performance feedback, and networking contacts that will help team members build out their professional knowledge, skills and abilities. Provide an engaging and welcoming work environment that helps them find personal satisfaction in their work and career development by connecting them to new internal and external opportunities that align with and reinforce their personal interests.  
  • Act as an emerging leader of finance’s global finance practice: Reinforce and improve a collaborative culture focused on content excellence, continuous improvement, flexibility, spirited and respectful debate, rapid learning, and a growth mindset. Work collaboratively with research leaders, content leaders, team managers, and other practice-aligned teams of quantitative and qualitative researchers across a global finance practice. Foster an environment of diversity, equity, inclusion and engagement on our team and drive Gartner’s commitment to DE&I throughout all aspects of the business: hiring practices, associate development, and client service. 

What you will need:  

  • Master's (Management, Economics, Sociology, Political Science, MBA etc.) or PhD degrees in fields such as management, social science, sociology
  • 9+ years of research and/or management consulting experience
  • At least 2 years of experience managing research projects end-to-end.
  • At least 2 years of experience in leading and managing a team of researchers ability to guide associates through an efficient production process that results in content that drives client retention 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with particular attention developing logical, intuitively consumable narratives that teach how to apply research findings.   
  • Ability to teach others how to gather, analyze, restructure, identify and create original insights from qualitative and/or quantitative data 
  • Objective approach to providing and explaining feedback and assessing performance while also being receptive to constructive feedback in a highly iterative research environment. 
  • Competence to meet deadlines, prioritize and organize tasks effectively, and manage work under ambiguity (e.g., changing factors, limited information) - and to coach others to do the same. 
  • Ability to navigate a highly matrixed, remote work environment with colleagues across the globe by proactively forming networks. 
  • Aspiration to constantly learn and improve 
  • Prior experience attracting, coaching, growing, and managing a high-performing team, formally or informally
