Gartner is hiring a Research Director Analyst focusing on the platforms that enable organizations, development teams, product teams to build, support, run software. We are seeking someone who is passionate about the engineering of DevOps platforms, tools, frameworks and automation to accelerate software development and delivery. Someone who has a developer focused foundation and has grown specifically into providing software engineering teams with enabling tools, technologies and platforms, and most importantly, a strong desire to help others learn and improve how they securely build software.
We are looking to hire an experienced platform engineer to fill this role. Recent hands-on experience as a software engineer with a platform engineering of focus is required.
This research director role creates thought leading research for technical professionals around the world. You will publish original research, speak with clients directly, and present at global events and on-site for client engagements. You must be a life-long learner and versatile individual, seasoned in technical software engineering.
This is an individual contributor role as part of a collaborative team of experts in Gartner’s Software Engineering for Technical Professionals practice. Our practice provides the backbone for Gartner software engineering research by creating, identifying, influencing, and sharing best practices across the software design, build and run lifecycle.
In this role you will help shape the way that automation and platforms are changing the landscape of software engineering for leading companies worldwide. You will use your expertise and the insights you gain during your Gartner career to guide architects, engineers and senior technologists across a wide range of industries, geographies and sizes. Conversely, our team will help you grow and expand your knowledge and expertise throughout your career at Gartner.
Gartner experts share our knowledge directly through published research, video calls with clients, and conferences worldwide. Responsibilities include:

Specific Coverage, Scope and Role Requirements
Gartner is seeking a technical professional with practitioner level platform engineering knowledge and experience. The successful candidate has substantial and active expertise within their area of proficiency. Qualified candidates will demonstrate expertise across multiple of the following areas:

10+ years of practitioner (hands-on technical) experience within modern software engineering and development with a focus on accelerating software delivery through the engineering of DevOps platforms, tools, frameworks and automation.

The following are “must have” areas of experience and expertise for this Director Analyst role:
-
Developer focused experiences that directly lead to hands-on technical implementation and maintenance of platforms built to support and enhance delivery of software applications through automation and advanced technical tooling.

Expertise in DevOps principles and practices inclusive of CI/CD tooling and automation of software build and deployment as well as the infrastructure tools-focused aspect and the “culture of collaboration” aspect within an agile software engineer landscape.

Direct hands-on technical experience enabling and supporting developer self-service in at least one context, such as development portals, command line interfaces (CLIs), API dev portals or similar platform deliverables

Expertise and experience in the following areas is advantageous:

Enabling developer self-service, through developer portals - experience of Backstage, OpsLevel, Cortex, Port, or similar as a further enhancement.

Understanding of the various DevOps Platforms, e.g. GitHub, Azure DevOps, GitLab, Atlassian, Digital.ai, Harness, or similar

Strong software development skills, experience and background

Experience with app-stores and how it relates to software engineering efforts

Cloud native platforms - aPaaS, fPaaS, CaaS, K8s (one or more cloud providers, with additional exposure to Openshift, VMWare Tanzu as a further enhancement)

Experience with Infrastructure as Code. Hands-on experience writing code - for example writing Ruby scripts for Chef or Puppet or YAML or Python for Ansible and SaltStack.

Ability to work with developers to understand their needs and expectations at a technical level.

Gartner technical professional analyst roles carry additional responsibilities and expectations:

Candidates may come from an enterprise environment, software vendor in the product team, development team from a supplier organization, or a consulting background with relevant experience in this space.

Whilst hands-on technical knowledge and experience is critical, it is equally important that the successful candidate has the ability to see beyond technology to meet business and commercial aims.

Strong writing and research skills, coupled with strong analytical skills.

Good presentation skills, including small to large audiences (500+ people)

Excellent collaboration skills, able to graciously give and receive constructive feedback

Ability to travel up to approximately 20% of the time, mostly within the region (EMEA/NA depending on home base), with some international travel.
