About this role:

Gartner is seeking a Legal Director to support our GDM (Gartner Digital Markets) offerings that include our Capterra, GetApp and Software Advice websites, services, and products.

This role serves as a key voice in the room providing advice to GDM product and sales teams (as well as other business teams) on all phases of the product, services, and sales development life cycles. Tackle topics such as consumer protection, marketing, intellectual property, advertising, privacy, and sales contracting issues that arise out of the operation and growth of a global service.

What you’ll do:  

  • Leverage good judgement and a strong business sense to assist product, engineering, business development, advertising, marketing, and other teams develop thoughtful strategies towards product development while assessing and mitigating legal risk.
  • Advise on product issues ranging from FTC regulations, Section 230 publisher immunity, Intellectual Property, commercial free speech, data protection, content regulation and privacy.
  • Assist with special projects including the expansion and localization of GDM offerings internationally.
  • Manage contract intake, escalations, training, coordination across internal teams like Gartner Digital Markets, Ombuds, Contracts Administration, Finance, Security, and Data Privacy teams.
  • Handle contract negotiations with strategic vendors, escalating within Commercial Legal as needed.
  • Maintain contract templates, internal talk tracks and contract library.
  • Conduct periodic training of GDM associates in sales contracting and other legal issues impacting the business.

What you’ll need:

  • 8+ years’ experience at a leading law firm, government agency, or in-house law department experience at a technology company
  • Familiarity with laws and regulations impacting online commerce such as Digital Advertising law, the Communications Decency Act Section 230 and the FTC Endorsement Guidelines
  • Previous contracting experience and ability to coordinate successfully among various functions
  • Experience with logistics of online commerce - familiarity with invoicing and payment structures, tax implications, content regulation etc.
  • Familiarity with data privacy laws involving collection/use of user PI, tracking of user activity via configurable cookies and conducting privacy impact assessments on new products and initiatives
  • Ability to coordinate and oversee large-scale legal review projects involving various internal business functions in fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks appropriately
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, assume responsibility, and own role
  • Additional foreign language skills a plus
