Gartner is recruiting for a Senior Director level candidate with experience acting as a subject matter expert on Application Software Modernization.
As an analyst, you remain ahead of the curve on developments and issues in the application modernization market, as well as adjacent areas such as data migration or archival. You drive innovative, trail-blazing, impactful, fact-based research and deliver that advice to clients.
To be successful in this role, you will have had experience applying application modernization strategies and technologies as well as a good understanding of critical business uses cases – you understand the crucial differences between, for example, transforming legacy application source code and moving workloads to the cloud.
Conduct on-going research and analysis specifically on modernization technologies and services, vendors and markets. You know or are willing to learn the vendors in this space.
Deliver thought-provoking and forward-looking insight into the field of application modernization across multiple generations of software platforms, spotting market changes before they happen.
Provide advice for both end-user as well as vendor clients regarding Gartner research, on the phone, via video, in person and during (virtual) conferences.
The candidate must have experience working at a senior level in technology vendor, service-provider, or in-house-led modernization initiatives, with direct experience of delivering client success. This should include proven skills and experience as follows:
Excellent writing and data visualization skills.
The ability to derive and blend qualitative “trend” reasoning backed by quantitative data.
Proven understanding of different application platform architectures and technologies, where this impacts the modernization approach.
An architectural mindset, providing strategic thinking from a systems-level perspective.
Proven track record advising business executives.
Ability to work collaboratively, pioneering or contributing to cross-team projects.
“Out of the box” big picture thinker who is adept at connecting the dots between different technologies and business models.
Ability to “deep dive” into emerging technologies and trends and then communicate implications and recommendations at an executive and strategic level.
Strong knowledge of application software architectures and technologies across multiple generations (mainframe, client/server, distributed, and cloud) and how to modernize them is a requirement, including:
Tools & Technologies
Market dynamics (e.g. growth in migration to cloud)
Knowledge of technologies, vendors, and practical experience achieved in transforming source code languages, migrating data to new platforms, and cloud migration, is a plus. Other requirements include:
10+ years experience working as a transformation leader or consultant for modernization initiatives.
Proven executive communication skills as evidenced by prior work experience presenting to or advising senior executives, investors, boards, or industry peers.
Experience guiding a technology department for a user organization or as a product manager for a vendor, or as senior consultant specializing in application modernization strategies. i.e., this role is strategic not primarily technical.
Demonstrated diagnostic ability to piece together fragments of information, applying conceptual models, recognizing patterns, drawing and maintain conclusions.
Strong work ethic, working both solo and in a team environment.
Strong project and time management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science or related field preferred.
